Are you drinking it unknowingly?

Kool Aid Official Music Video

Our minds can easily be controlled by outside forces if we aren’t its own masters.  It is our responsibility to observe our thoughts and be vigilant about choosing which ones to entertain and which ones to ditch.  Otherwise, we could fall into the trap of giving others permission to dictate what we think, do and say, often without fully realizing it.  One of the worst-case scenarios of this was the massacre that occurred in Jonestown, where a cult leader, Jim Jones, tragically deluded his followers into imbibing his notion of “revolutionary suicide”, with this Kool-Aid like drink that was laced with poison (1 & 2).  So you see, not being our mind’s own master can lead to fatality. Unfortunately, every day, external factors aim to make us think a certain way, such as advertisements (which seem to be everywhere), as well as societal standards.  However, constant evaluation and examination of our thought processes can help keep at bay, the manipulative factors that impede us from creating our own thoughts, based on our true values.

Advertisements scheme to trigger emotions that would lead us to purchase things we don’t actually need or truly want.  Did you know that Edward Bernays, the father of public relations and Sigmund Freud’s nephew, was responsible for getting women to smoke cigarettes despite it being taboo in 1929?  Intrigued by his uncle’s notion that irrational forces drive human behavior, Bernays sought to harness those forces to sell products for his clients (3). His successful campaign convinced women to feel that they were practicing their rights by smoking in public. While cigarettes cannot really give anybody their freedom nor independence, Bernays found a way to trigger that feeling of power in women, every time they sparked up a fag. He created a false want or need of the cigarettes, by conditioning them to feel empowered when they smoked.

Decades later, Bernays method prevails, like Coca-Cola’s “Happiness in a bottle” campaign.  Do you really think that happiness exists in a bottle?   â€śHuman beings are more swayed by emotion than they are by logic or simple statistics” (4), therefore, even though a drink with high sugar content should signal health warnings, Coca-Cola’s well-crafted campaign basically tells us that we should drink their product in order to be happy, and many seem to act on such an irrational suggestion!  Often times, we don’t seem to think twice about how we could follow such bogus recommendations.

In a very similar sense, our society seems to suggest we follow a standardized path in order to feel successful. The majority of us tend follow it regardless of how much it doesn’t fit with our values. By society’s standards, success often means checking off things on a time-sensitive list that’s imposed upon us:  finish school, pick a career, find a partner, get married, buy a house, have children, save for retirement, you get the picture.  While there is nothing wrong with this checklist, it just isn’t for everyone.  So, when checking off items on this list, on time, is imposed as the standard measure of success, it leaves out millions of people who, for some reason or another, cannot or wouldn’t want to follow this list.  After all, we are all unique individuals with our own unique gifts to share with the world, and thus our paths will naturally differ.  We each have our life purpose and if our actions align with our values, then we are fulfilling that purpose.  That, to me, is true success.  “There are so many outside voices telling us what to do, how to eat, dress, or style our home offices… It’s time to cut out the external and focus in on ourselves.  Maybe success is being able to create the lifestyle you want.” (5). In other words, if we take the time to listen to what is going on in our minds, we can tame it by cutting out external pressures, get to the heart of our own values and honour them; so that we may attain peace of mind which will then set the tone for us to experience what success really means to us.

Otherwise, “much of our view of reality is based on media messages that have been pre-constructed and have attitudes, interpretations, and conclusions already built in” (6).  If media literacy can help us see through the emotional triggers (that are placed everywhere by large influential campaigns), so that we may avoid its intended effects; then meditation is a tool that can help us clarify what our true values are.  It helps us discern the choices that are aligned with our values from the choices we are pressured to make.

I find it important now, more than ever, to protect our minds from all external forces that are trying to mould it to our disadvantage. There are many tools to help us become masters of our own minds. While mainstream media likes to tell us how we should feel and what we should believe in, media literacy is our shield that can help us question the messages behind the media; to initiate the self-reflection needed in order to guard us from its ill intents. And even though societal standards can be heavy if we allow the pressures to weigh us down, meditation can help us get in touch with our unique life purpose which can uplift us if we honour it. Constant observation and investigation are ways we can use our mind to our advantage, as opposed to leaving it at the mercy of those who would jump at the opportunity to abuse it for their own benefit.  Don’t drink the “Kool-Aid”, you’re better off without it!

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Confucius

If you’re reading this, then you’ve somehow survived this crazy year that had the whole world on lock-down for months. I’d like to tell you that you inspire me. I’m inspired to witness people’s resilience throughout the see-saw of uncertainties 2020 has brought about.

Every morning during meditation, I strongly feel the energy of hope when tuning into our collective consciousness.  I know I haven’t been alone, hope is alive and available to everyone!  Yet, I also know that many haven’t been able to rest all that easy, and perhaps hope, to them, has been more like a faint voice from a distant place.  I recently wrote this song to help people ease their minds and draw that voice of hope closer:

One practice that helps me attain peace of mind is journaling.  Regularly confiding in those pages helps me get to know myself on a deeper level to the point where I’ve become my own best friend.  Most importantly, I feel lighter after writing down all my worries, allowing me to see them for what they are and eventually let them go.

I have put together a 7-day journaling program for those who wish to get into the healthy habit of writing in a diary, or, for those wishing to get back at it.  Journaling is a powerful practice that helps us turn down the outside noise and facilitate our journey inwards.  It helps us calm down, follow our hearts and feel hope.  Ultimately, it can help us move towards being our true selves, living our best lives.  If this resonates with you, please sign up here to get your free PDF of the 7-day program.  You will also be able to download my latest song, “Rest”, as my gift to you, for having the courage to embark on your personal journey to your heart.

It seems the main theme for this year is that change is inevitable.  Most people, myself included, have been forced to take new directions, new decisions, that don’t necessarily guarantee security.  I know this has been tiring for many.  Having to bend with the changes exposes the weight of our impedimenta that slows us down.  But underneath all that baggage, hope is there helping us to push through. Maybe the ultimate shift required to get us through this year is to pack light, carrying with us only the essentials that allow us to enjoy life as we should.

Like you, I’ve struggled with the burden of incertitude in the past few months.  I found myself urgently needing to re-calibrate.  Thus, I put everything on pause (save all the necessary tasks I was obliged to do) and focused on self-care.  As I began to feel at ease, clouds started dissipating and cleared the way for me to see the bare necessities for expressing my life purpose.  I found the courage to drop my fears and remembered I’ve got wings to fly with! Uncertainty need not feel heavy, especially if we replace anxiety with peace, trusting that we have everything we need to prevail.

I’ve had no choice but to go with the flow ever since completing my album 2 years ago.  Constant life changes might have affected my plans for delivery, but with all the experiences I’ve been blessed with, it only feels right in my heart to continue using my creative energies to remind people that hope is always available, especially during an epoch filled of discouraging hurdles.

I’m happy to announce that my album Stop & Think will be available on all music platforms on October 9, 2020. You can pre-save or pre-add by clicking on the album cover below:

French Manilla – As Above So Below

As I flow with the waves in the sea they call life,

I let go of the masses of stress in strife,

contradicting notions, lost values at their height,

light-weight principles, diminishing insights

Starlight, let me take you inside

the city-wide, nation-wide, world-wide

universal laws and take you for a ride

Unfold your eyes to the tiniest size

of particles, be humble and let your visions rise

to the sharpness of knowingness, the specks that move about you

Everything and nothingness inevitably surround you

Yes, you’re a part of this so see the potential bliss

in yourself, in the leaves, in the grass, in the kiss

Kiss of sun rays and beams of moon glow

warmed by the peace, as above so below

Oh can’t you see the walls are breaking down

So c’mon be yourself because the time is now

Free from fear and brave at heart are yours to start

Love yourself today or you just might fall apart

Love yourself first and the rest will follow (don’t fall apart)

Gotta make that move even if it takes slow (don’t fall apart)

A storm may brew but we must stay mellow (don’t fall apart)

Keep in touch with the real, as above so below

Don’t you know it’s insane ad in vain staying down

on your own being, you shine brighter than a crown

Get aligned with your beliefs, keep searching till you stumble

upon your inner gems, all yours so be thankful

for who and what you are, you can melt your ice of sorrows

Hate, eliminate it, ain’t a part of your escrow

Stomp to the beat of pride, only you can decide

to release and let go old tears that have dried

Unearth your joy, sip from the cup of dignity

Evaporate unnecessary negativity

Why hurt yourself?  There’s no wound left to bleed

Listen to your higher power, take heed her creed

After all, you’re her hope, her one planted seed

well cultivated for the day that you may lead

uncharted territories, like minds united

Rewrite our history with new sense ignited

Oh can’t you see the walls are breaking down

So c’mon be yourself because the time is now

Free from fear and brave at heart are yours to start

Love yourself today or you just might fall apart

Love yourself first and the rest will follow (don’t fall apart)

Gotta make that move even if it takes slow (don’t fall apart)

A storm may brew but we must stay mellow (don’t fall apart)

Keep in touch with the real, as above so below

Many years ago, on an island in Thailand, I was lying on the beach and was propelled to look up at the stars.  Although I loved being on my own, I wondered about my future partner whom I had not yet met, and was sometimes sad to be living without.  I imagined him to be a magical soul who comes from one of those stars.  That evening, I stared at one star amongst the millions that were in the sky, and talked to him, somehow knowing that he could hear my heart calling.  I wondered what his name was.  This song is inspired by that one starry night in the tropics.

From the Stars (Official Music Video)

Years later, I finally met him!  On FĂŞte de la Musique/Summer Solstice in France, we felt an instant connection.  We got married a few more years later, on the same day.  Music is a big part of our lives and most of my songs had originally started out with him.  Now he makes my music videos, amongst his many occupations and talents.

My relationship with my husband is one I am very proud of.  We certainly have our ups and downs but overall, my life with him is my most beautiful dream come true.  There’s a saying that goes, “You get what you expect” and I’ve always expected only the best.  I firmly believe that is what I deserve, nothing less.  And so it was either all or nothing for me.  I was single for a long time, but I cherished that time I had for myself.  I learned to make it my first priority, to love myself, because I didn’t want to wait for someone else to do that for me before I could be happy.  That happiness is my responsibility.  I’m thankful to have a husband who respects and understands that, as he helps me be the best person I can be.  I’m also happy that I can reciprocate. I enjoy caring for him and helping him reach his full potential.  Together, we make a pretty good team on this adventure we call life.

FĂŞte de la Musique/ Summer Solstice

I think back to that night when I talked to a star, thinking of him. I’m reminded that he is indeed a magical soul. Aren’t we all? Aren’t we all made of stardust? If you’re currently single, and sometimes wonder about what your love life could look like, remember that you are a magical soul, capable of experiencing the miracles of love in your life. May I suggest for you to define your vision of love, and strive to actually feel how you imagine it would feel like.  For me, I aimed for that simple feeling of being in love.  And instead of waiting to “fall” in love, I started to rise in love with my own being and with this life that I’ve been blessed with.  Then one day, that feeling led me to the event of meeting my future husband.  I hope this song helps you imagine your version of rising in love, and capture that feeling in your heart.  Who knows where it could lead you to? Happy Valentine’s day! Â
